She’s not even a fully fleshed out character, but… what I love about her is how… unapologetically herself she is. I love how subversive her narrative is, and how she overcomes all the obstacles that her gender and her low social class imposed on her. Losing Eleanor, or rather, seeing her two-facedness, teaches her a lot about how power dynamics really work, and she uses that lesson to come on top of all the people that made light of her or overlooked her. She had nothing, and she still lost everything.

In season one, she’s just a whore who doesn’t really possess anything, a pawn in the bigger chess game of power, and yet by the end of the series she becomes one of the most powerful pieces on the checkerboard, all through sheer power of wits and willpower. Maxes journey throughout the series can also be associated to phoenix symbolism. She births new life in a place that should’ve been death. Her character is supposed to be all about sacrifice and constraints, but at the end of the day, she’s what makes it possible for the Will of the Abyss to get a voice. Her life is a ticking clock towards her inevitable sentence, and yet she’s the only character of the entire series who makes the most of it, following her whims and escaping her prison all the time. She had all the reasons to hate the world that emprisoned her, but instead, she loves it above anything else. Yet, her simple act of breathing is a rebellion in itself. And she obediently decided not to protest it for her brother’s sake. She knew that her existence was cursed and that she would one day have to be casted out in the Abyss to keep up the balance between the two worlds. Lacie is really different from the two above in that she never actually tried to protest her fate, though. Female characters who make the most of their adverse circumstances are a weakness of mine. Ok I definitely have a type here lmao but. After all, she only exploits people around her for their usefulness, the same way her father exploited her, but at the same time… would a real monster be so bothered by her mother’s opinion of her to the point of losing her mind over it? It’s so easy to think of her as one, too. She grew up even more unloved than Eto, even if she wasn’t outright casted out like a dirty secret, and ended up embracing the narrative of a monster that her own mother forced upon her. Similarly, I also love Azula for that reason. She’s probably my fav villain of all time. She takes the archetype of the female monster and wears it proudly, but at the same time she deconstructs it from the inside. Her cruelty is as much a result of her loveless (with the exception of a fellow monster) upbringing as it is a deliberate choice. What I love about Eto is that she was a broken, throwaway child, but she refused that narrative and forcibly became the writer in charge by taking a pen and rewriting the story herself. Rutless female villains who take absolutely no shit from the world that wasn’t kind to them are an absolute weakness of mine. So… in no particular order: Eto - Tokyo ghoul
